Ercolano is a city and comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Naples in the region of Campania in southern Italy. It lies at the western foot of Mount Vesuvius, on the Gulf of Naples, just southeast of Naples. It has 49,179 inhabitants.

  1. October 4 1943
    Discharged and hitching toward newly-liberated Naples, Lewis passes through Battipaglia, devastated by Allied carpet bombing, and learns nearby Altavilla was shelled to rubble on the mere suspicion it held Germans. Further on, he witnesses desperate Neapolitan housewives publicly exchanging sex for tins of rations with American soldiers.
  2. January 5 1944
    Lewis takes charge of security for several nearby towns, unknowingly located deep in Camorra territory, and finds poverty behind their picturesque exteriors.
  3. March 24 1944
    With the eruption subsiding, Lewis meets Del Giudice, an eccentric folklore writer and expert on San Gennaro and Vesuvius.
