Background

Aversa is a city and comune in the Province of Caserta in Campania, southern Italy, about 24 km north of Naples. It is the centre of an agricultural district, the Agro Aversano, producing wine and cheese. Aversa is also the main seat of the faculties of Architecture and Engineering of the Università degli studi della Campania “L.

In Naples ’44

    Amid ongoing famine, Lewis investigates an assault on a peasant family by deserters, and is later approached with a plea for help from one of the victims.
  2. November 5 1943
    New contacts Losurdo and Mosca reveal the same pattern as Lattarullo: impoverished nobility clinging to grand, half-empty palazzi.
  3. December 18 1943
    Lewis describes how gullible unit commanders and their local interpreters get dragged into baseless denunciations and village feuds, including against a corrupt police marshal.
  4. January 5 1944
    Lewis takes charge of security for several nearby towns, unknowingly located deep in Camorra territory, and finds poverty behind their picturesque exteriors.
