In the book
Lewis reluctantly travels to Torrito to hear his account of the ‘heroic four days’ of the September 1943 uprising and the SS reprisal that followed — a massacre that has left the whole village in mourning. He finds Albano a haggard, haunted man who speaks very quietly, as if afraid of being overheard.
